Classmate #1 Jenetha Pettiway

What insights have you had?

As I read on and research my topics I find a lot of women that has some part of participation in or before the Civil war. A women named Mary Bethune, in 1935 organized the national council of negro women. a coalition of black women’s group that lobbies against job discrimination, racism, and sexism. There were many amendments and laws discussed when going through the league of women voters. Some issues were stiffening of act to enforce educational rights for children and creation of division of dental hygiene for children under state boards health. As a man also he inherits his politics and voting as his father and grandfather before him but a women she may be Presbyterian because of her mother but not a democrat because of her father or husband.

The support that African America received from other races struck me the most this week. During a time of separation that led to fatal consequences, supporters joined together to achieve the same goal of equal rights to African Americans. Supporters risk their lives to participate in peaceful Sit-Ins at the Woolworth’s drugstore in Greensboro, North Carolina, that only allowed Whites to sit and eat lunch at their counter. This protest only started with four African American students from North Carolina Agricultural and the Technical State University. However, the protest grew to include most race. “Over succeeding days the protest grew until hundreds of students, African American and White, occupied the lunch counter. They sat quietly and endured taunts, curses, and even being spat upon. The protest spread to other stores in other cities across the South.”

I realized that I had a difficult time getting through some of these chapters because it was personal for me. Since I am a veteran, I could not imagine supporting a country where I had no rights.
