The French New Wave is widely considered to be one of the most influential movements in film history; inspiring filmmakers across the globe and throughout the decades since its inception.
For this essay, choose a filmmaker who youbelieve has a cinematic style that was influenced by – or is at least reminiscentof– the style of the French New Wave. We mentioned a few American filmmakers in class who claim the FNW as an important influence (Steven Soderberg, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino) – but there are so many more. If you are having trouble choosing a director, you might consider doing some research on filmmakers who have been influenced by the FNW.
Once you have chosen your filmmaker, choose at least two of their films for your analysis.
Write a 5 page analytical essay that explains whyyou think this filmmaker’s style is reminiscent of the French New Wave. Make sure to include illustrative examples from the films – described in detail – to support your argument. Also, be sure to explain how these stylistic techniques help this filmmaker to achieve their artistic vision.
You may choose any filmmaker you like – from any part of the world. (The only requirement, of course, is that their career began afterthe French New Wave!).
