I once had a manager that all she wanted to do was manage and not be a leader. She had a tone, and people were afraid to go to her to talk about any issues they had because they were afraid of getting in trouble. There has to be a balance between the leader and manager style. Effective leaders should be able to have great communication with all staff, be knowledgeable, and approachable. They can manage a unit, and still be friendly but there needs to be a line between leader and friend.You cannot be one without the other, but too much of one can cause more harm than good.
