Mahmoud et al. (2020) found that the main findings of this study were varying levels of workplace motivation across the X, Y, and Z generations. The X generation, or Baby Boomers, were motivated primarily by job security, good benefits, and loyalty. The Y generation, or Millennials, were motivated more by career development opportunities, work-life balance, and recognition. The Z generation, or Generation Z, was motivated primarily by autonomy, creativity, and purpose. The study found that the varying life experiences of each generation could explain generational differences in workplace motivation. X-generation workers had typically experienced more traditional, hierarchical work environments and were more focused on stability and security. Z-generation workers had experienced more technology-driven work environments and were more focused on autonomy, creativity, and purpose.
