Sharing information, whether it is clinical, administrative, educational, or research-based, is extremely important to maintain the current knowledge that is necessary to be successful in the profession. Networking is a crucial way for nurses, both in clinical practice and academia, to stay abreast of new knowledge and changes in the field. In addition, personal affiliations and networking open the opportunity to be able to better influence decisions, which benefit your career goals. In the same way that nurses build trust and rapport with patients, trust and rapport with key decision-making personnel could influence the ease with which new ideas and riskier choices are adopted. Networking is about building a system of mutually beneficial relationships. If you need to find a new job, for example, you can reach out to someone in your network and ask for information, advice or a referral. If you are an effective networker, you will also be able to provide that same person with your own recommendations, information or referrals when it’s their turn to reach out to you.
