Pereira Post The following criminal topic I feel is the most significant in our current time is the issue of human trafficking due to its vast and hidden characteristics. Human trafficking has arguably the most damaging effects on the victims. Human trafficking involves recruiting, harboring, transporting, provision, or obtaining a person for labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. This is a very serious and long-term form of kidnapping and modern-day slavery. Due to the lack of research and information available on a very frequent form of enslavement, it seems the most significant. Cases that go mentioned in media include information that can be useful in identifying and preventing different forms of human trafficking. Most of where people are currently being trafficked remain unidentifiable. A collective effort is required to identify these locations. Sex trafficking has received increased attention in more recent years, which has helped raise awareness. However, there is an equally likely chance of labor trafficking, in addition to sex trafficking. The trafficking experience, no matter which area, exposes victims to the harsh reality of exploitation and forced services. The most targeted group to become trafficked are those who face extreme poverty — often undocumented immigrants. This modern-day slavery gains people through kidnapping, trickery, force, selling, or birthed into trafficking. Trafficking exploits victims in countless ways over sometimes a lifetime of servitude. The economic conditions cause disparity amongst the victims. Traffickers prey on vulnerability in their victims through their own personal characteristics or through isolation. This practice is often misleading, with inhumane unsafe conditions, that do not compensate well (Logan, Walker, & Hunt, 2009). Out of the proposed criminal topics from this week, human trafficking is by far the worst. The criminal topic I believe is the least significant is the problem of spectator violence at sporting events. In comparison to the other issues presented this week, ‘spectator violence’ does not seem to hold the same weight in terms of significance. While this issue is important to understand and talk about, the other issues are much more influential to a more widened scope of people. This form of violence is limited to spectators in and around events, drawing attention to the overall atmosphere. The atmosphere of an event has different characteristics that can contribute to the likelihood of violence. The atmosphere, while it may influence more violence than outside the event, is only a temporary one (Block, & Lesneskie, 2017). The article on Black Friday was arguably one of the least significant as well, due to the lack of presence or overall influence this has in a victim’s everyday life. Black Friday does however connect with the overall problems relating to consumerism (Raymen, & Smith, 2015). The Minimalists (2021) portrays the ongoing negative effects capitalism has on the consumer. The urge to continuously buy unneeded material products is driven through advertising. Advertising and marketing have the ability to manipulate and transform an individual’s interests and values. Similarly, The College Admissions Scandal (2021) draws light on the cultural demand certain prestigious universities create. The demand is not mainly for the educational benefits, but more for the status gains. The social values individuals have formed are the main cause of all of these criminal topics. Society and the culture are what prevents or creates violence and crime. Telma post week 4 COLLAPSE Top of Form Out of all of the criminal topics mentioned in this week’s reading, the one I perceive as the most problematic in the current time would be human trafficking. Known as the modern-day slavery, human trafficking in used to characterize instances in which individuals use force or coercion to engage others in free or underpaid labor, services, or very commonly sexual acts. This is a criminal issue affecting people all over the world, United States included. People are either trafficked nationally or internationally. National trafficking in the United States is more often than not for sex reasons, while international trafficking can also be for labor, sale of children and even for illegal organ trafficking. It is estimated that more than twenty-seven million people in varying countries are still trapped due to trafficking (Bales, 2005). This is an overly concerning figure, and the reason this issue requires unprecedented attention. When individuals are trafficked, they are not the only ones negatively affected, but their families, friends and communities are also affected, which very much broadens the numbers and screams for urgency in effective resolution. The criminal topic I believe is the least concerning is the spectator fights at stadiums and arenas in North America. This is because it is an issue which is not equally affecting other parts of the world, therefore making its consequences not as devastating as other topics listed. Another reason is that contributing factors such as alcohol misuse have been identified and are potentially easier to eliminate or at least diminish. Jordan post I think the biggest difference to determine which crimes are most significant or least significant is to establish if there is a threat or danger to public safety. Does this put others at risk? If so, then I think that it is significant enough. In this week’s reading we read and watched a few criminal topics, and some were more significant than others. The most significant to me out of it all was the human trafficking. This is something that is not well known to people and even though we know it happens we do not address it enough. This month is human trafficking month, and you see more ads about insurance companies trying to save you money than you do someone being owned and trafficked. Most of these girls who are trafficked have no control over their lives and they are in a vulnerable place to begin with, and they have nothing. They are runaways who have no where to go, they are sold by family members to make a dollar, and they have no one. This affects the safety of others because anyone can be a victim of this. These people are out there kidnapping and recruiting girls every day. The other criminal topics had some significance as well with regards to the sporting event fights. That can be a public safety concern. That deviant behavior can then turn into other things. We have seen events that have happened where fights broke out and then it was followed by a stabbing or shooting. When alcohol is involved, we always see a spike of violence which is why at events we need police and safety and security personnel. Now some may think the opposite about this one, but the college scandal was not most significant for me. I think this continues to happen on a daily basis where colleges accept donations, funds, or other items in return for an acceptance. I also think when it comes to those ivy league schools politics also play a huge role. With that said, I don’t think Rick Singer, and anyone involved got enough consequences for their actions. I feel as if they were let off the hook with minimal punishment. I think they should have served more jail time and had a harsher punishment. What I mentioned before, this does not have a threat or danger to public safety in the way that those other crimes do. If someone is bribing a college for money or cheating on a test, yes, it is absolutely wrong but there is no threat to safety. Therefore, I would establish this a least significant criminal topic.
