STUDENT 1: Merle

Hello Everyone,

This week we are talking about mental issues and we were asked to discuss one. I don’t think that anyone is more important than the other. I do believe that some may require more treatment than another. For example, a person with Autism would need a different kind of help than a person diagnosed with schizophrenia. I think that maybe a child with the diagnosis of Autism would be pretty hard to deal with. Depending on how far they are on the spectrum determines how much attention they would need. A person that is higher on the spectrum would be easier to deal with than a child that was lower on the spectrum. My husband has a child who is 12 years old and has high-functioning Autism. He isn’t that bad comparatively, he does take medication because he does have some issues, but it is not as bad as it could be. I am thankful that he is not a huge problem with school. I think the most important symptom for me would be the constant observation of your child and even when the child is behaving badly out in public. I say this because other people would just not understand. The biggest thing that can be done to help take care of the person would first be an understanding of Autism. Another important thing that I would need would be the attention that would be required to help me live a normal life and be able to be out on my own. Hopefully this would be possible because I know some children with Autism will never be able to live by themselves or have any sort of career. I think the best way for me to be able to fight this if I had it would be therapy. Therapy can do so much for people who are having a hard time because of mental disorders.

STUDENT 2: Rachel

This week’s lessons talked about different psychological disorders, treatments and therapy.This was the topic I was most looking forward to when seeing our upcoming lessons. Learning about these different disorders really opens your eyes to what you have missed or the how misunderstood the people are who suffer from them.

In my opinion, I think schizophrenia would be one of the most challenging disorders to have. I think it is a very misunderstood disorder and can be challenging for those suffering with it because they are not understood by everyone around them. Schizophrenia seems to be confused with Multiple Personality Disorder sometimes. I think that this could be stemmed from that person’s hallucinations and being delusional. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be looked at as “psycho” all the time and have those around you see you as a threat. One of the more challenging symptoms for me would be suffering from disorganized speech and thoughts. Knowing what you want to say but not being able to produce the words correctly would be incredibly frustrating or having your own body force words out for you. High stress days can cause disorganized thoughts for anyone, so dealing with that on a daily basis and not understanding what is going on in your own head and not being able to control where your thoughts go, is just unfathomable. If I were to suffer from this disorder I would want society as well as my family to be patient with me and understand that there can be improvement. I would not want them to see me as dangerous crazy person that is a lost cause but instead work with me and help me seek the medical attention I would need. A few treatment options for this disorder could be the proper medication, counseling/therapy, or some sort of help center where that person could go and talk with others suffering from the same disorder.
